Woodland Partnerships with Treegeneration

Treegeneration works in partnership with farmers and landowners to diversify and generate new income through the Woodland Carbon Code (WCC), by planting trees and selling the carbon that they capture as they grow.

Our offer to landowners:

  • Project manage new woodland developments in partnership with you and get them verified with the WCC;

  • Help raise the cash for planting trees and establishing the woodland;

  • Sell the carbon that the trees produce on the carbon market on your behalf.

Eligibility for the WCC

  • In order to be classed as a woodland, and therefore be eligible for the WCC, a project needs to be a minimum of 0.5ha (1.25 acres), although a project of this scale is not likely to be as cost effective as a larger planting. The area planted must also be at least 20m wide.

  • The WCC defines woodland creation as the human-induced conversion to woodland of land that has not been under tree cover for at least 25 years.

  • Woodland is only eligible if it is being created on soil that is non-organic (i.e. less than 50cm depth peat). This is because deep peat soils are a natural reserve of carbon, and planting trees in these conditions would release the peat already stored in the ground back onto the atmosphere, resulting in no net gain in carbon sequestration.

  • In order to get validated by the WCC a project needs to demonstrate 'additionality', which means you are required to show that the woodland would not get created without the income you generate from the sale of your carbon.

Woodland Partnerships

Partnerships are about sharing the risk as well as the reward. Treegeneration requires a one-off £250 partner buy-in from landowners, in order to establish commitment, but after that we share the risk with you all the way down the line.

New Woodland Partners are provided with the following:

  • A Partnership Agreement,
  • Initial site visit
  • Project page on the Treegeneration web site
  • Registration of your project with the Woodland Carbon Code using Treegeneration's project developer account.

Partnership Terms

Our offer to landowners is threefold:

  1. Project manage new woodland developments in partnership with you and get them verified with the WCC;
  2. Help raise the cash for planting trees and establishing the woodland;
  3. Sell the carbon that the trees produce on the carbon market on your behalf.

Treegeneration requires a 10% commission on any start up costs raised through grant funding, crowd source funding or the pre-selling carbon units.

Upon successful validation of the project with the WCC, Treegeneration will require a 1% share of the carbon allocated to the project. (Negotiable for larger projects.)

Finally Treegeneration will charge a 5% commission on any carbon offsets that we sell on your behalf in the future. (Negotiable for larger projects.)
